Donald W. Sprung

July 5, 1923 — June 9, 2018

Donald W. Sprung, age 94 of Berrien Springs, died Saturday, June 9, 2018 following a brief illness.

Don was born and raised in Detroit. Following high school, he enlisted in the U.S. Army during WWII, becoming an OSS supervisor of radio communications with field agents behind enemy lines. He earned the American, European, Middle Eastern Theater ribbons, Victory Medal and recently received the WWII OSS Congressional Medal of Honor. After WWII, Don attended college while working with Chevrolet and became the Chevrolet Dealer ((1953) in Berrien Springs for the next 32 years. Don was a charter member/past president of Rotary Club and American Legion Post 85 and a member of the VFW.

Don and his wife, Mary Ellen, enjoyed traveling to many parts of the world and in retirement RVing with three trips to his favorite place, Alaska. Don’s radio experience in WWII was rekindled shortly after retirement (WX8Y) where he enjoyed communicating with his many friends on a daily basis.

He is survived by his sons: Paul (Barbara), David (Heike), John (Sheila); his daughter, Donna; his grandchildren: Brian, Andy, Sarah, Laura, Jason, Josh, Alison; and eight great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Ellen, in 2006.

At Don’s request, there will be no funeral service. Allred Funeral Home is coordinating his burial, which will take place at Union Cemetery at a later date. Memorials in his name may be made to the American Legion Post 85 or the Humane Society of Southwestern Michigan. Online memories may be shared with his family at www.allredfuneralhome.com.

Don’s family was very blessed to have him for so many years, and besides his love and generosity, he taught us that the most important things we can give to each other are memories.
