Charles R. Dowell Monday, August 15, 1932 - Sunday, April 16, 2017

Charles Robert Dowell, 84, of Berrien Springs, died Easter Sunday, April 16, 2017, at Lakeland Medical Center in St. Joseph.

He was born in Knoxville, Tennessee, to Walter Ernest and Rhea (Short) Dowell on August 15, 1932, the only son of six children. He served in the Army from August 25, 1953 to August 1, 1961 and was stationed mainly in Germany.

He was a music teacher in the southwest Michigan area for many years and was a positive influence on his students and remembered by many.  He then started his own insurance business and served his clients with kind, thoughtful and ethical care for the remainder of his working years.

Charles was preceded in death by his parents and sisters, Bessie and Sally.  He is survived by three sisters: Nancy, Martha, and Kathy; his wife, Judith Ann Deck Dowell; his children: Randy (Leslie) Dowell, Teri (Chris) Dowell Guzicki, and Mike Dowell; and six grandchildren: Drake and Mollie Dowell, Jon, Ben and Alison Guzicki, and Dana Dowell.

He will be remembered for his infectious smile, his willingness to help anyone in need, and well-loved and very missed by his wife, children, and grandchildren. He loved to sit on the porch watching the birds and the sunset, and talking about the years he sang in the men’s quartet.

The family will greet friends from 4-5 p.m. Thursday, April 20, in the Youth Chapel of Pioneer Memorial Church on the campus of Andrews University, with a memorial service following at 5 p.m. Memorials may be made to Adventist Frontier Missions, Berrien Springs.  Online messages

The Dowell family would like to extend their gratitude to the staff of Lakeland Medical Center, Great Lakes Heart (specifically Dr. Pow), and also Dr. Hamel for their attentiveness and loving care.

I'm so sad to hear of Charles' passing. He was a soft spoken person with a great smile. I knew him from Berrien Teachers CU for many years. My prayers are with you all. God Bless

Please accept my sincere condolences. Losing a loved one in death is one of the hardest things to deal with in life. However, we can draw comfort from the Bible account of the resurrection of Jesus' friend, Lazarus, recorded at John 11: 11-14. Just as Jesus awakened Lazarus, one day we too will see our loved ones again as promised at John 5:28, 29 and Rev. 21: 3, 4. Until that day comes, it is my hope that you will continue to be comforted by the words found at Jeremiah 29: 11, 12. We are assured that when we pray to Jehovah God, he will listen.
