Floris L. Schug

July 15, 1931 — September 3, 2020

Floris L. (Masten) Schug, 89, passed peacefully comforted by family on Sept. 3, 2020.

Floris was born July 15, 1931 to Rellie E. and Lavina V. (Solomon) Masten at their home in Almena Township. She attended school at Almena Country School District #2 and graduated from Paw Paw High School. After graduation, Floris worked behind the soda fountain at Dillon’s Pharmacy in Paw Paw, where she met and married her husband of 68 years, David D. Schug. They moved to Berrien Springs and opened Schug Drug Store in Jan. 1952. The drugstore was owned by David and Floris until 1990, when they sold the family business to their son, David H. Schug.

As a resident of Berrien Springs, Floris was very involved in many community activities, including the Civic League, volunteering with the Hospital Auxiliary and the Blossomland Queen Committee.

Floris is survived by her four children: David H. Schug (Allyn) of Cassopolis, Melissa Koetsier (David) of Saline, Brenda Barancik of Berrien Springs, Denise Schug of South Bend; five grandchildren: Evelyn Schug, Samantha Heffner (Eddie), Danielle Craft (Bill), Amanda Bell-Cope (Jesse), Jonathan Guthrie; five great-grandchildren; and sister, Nola Geissel.

She was preceded in death by her parents; an older brother, Wilford Bill Masten; and her husband, David D. Schug.

Floris will be remembered by family and friends as a devoted and loving wife, mother and friend. She was very artistic and passed her passion for drawing, painting and photography on to many family members. Each year at the family reunion, it was common knowledge that Floris would take the group photograph…and each year they would expect Floris to arrange, and rearrange the group, ending with her saying “Just one more take”, followed by groans and laughter from the group. Her artistic eye definitely created some wonderful pictures throughout the years.

Her loving care of her family will be forever missed by her children, who are thankful for her always being “our soft place to fall”, and to both parents for creating a nurturing, loving childhood.

Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held at a later date. Messages and memories may be shared online at www.allredfuneralhome.com.
