David D. Schug, 96, passed peacefully June 29, 2019 in Niles, surrounded by his loving family.
David was born Feb. 19, 1923 to Herbert Eber and IO (Gorrell) Schug in LaOtto, Ind. The family moved to Marcellus in the late 1920s, where he attended school at Edwards Corners and graduated from Marcellus High School. After graduation, he enlisted and served three years in the Navy during WWII. David went on to graduate from Ferris Institute College of Pharmacy and work at Dillon’s Pharmacy in Paw Paw, where he met and married his wife of 68 years, Floris (Masten) on Dec. 2, 1951. They moved to Berrien Springs and opened Schug Drug Store in Jan. 1952. The drugstore was owned by David and Floris until 1990, when they sold the family business to David H. Schug. David D. continued to work at the store as a pharmacist until it closed in Oct. 2005.
As a resident and business owner in Berrien Springs, David was very involved in the community. He was a trustee on the Oronoko Township Board for 26 years, Township representative on the Medic 1 Ambulance Board for 20 years, and served on several key committees over the years that improved the cemeteries, park, library, and fire and police departments.
David is survived by his wife, Floris; their four children: David H. Schug (Allyn) of Cassopolis, Melissa Koetsier (David) of Saline, Brenda Barancik of Berrien Springs, Denise Schug of South Bend; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; brother, Richard Schug of Marcellus; sister, Etola Kirby of Grand Blanc.
David was preceded in death by his parents and three older brothers: Merl, Arlo and Lewis. Also Brigitte Malling, who he embraced as a daughter.
His family and friends will forever miss his gentle, generous spirit…his love of family, community, and the “constant parade of animals” his children brought home regularly through the years, as well as his quick wit, genuine smile and contagious laugh.
Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. Wed., July 3, at Allred Funeral Home, 212 S. Main St., Berrien Springs. A Funeral Service will be at noon Friday, July 5, in Marcellus, with 11 a.m. visitation and viewing at Edwards Corners Bible Church (51047 Chamberlain Rd., 49067), at the corner of Flowerfield Rd. and Chamberlain Rd.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in David’s memory can be made to: Berrien Springs Community Library, 215 W. Union St., Berrien Springs, MI 49103; or Humane Society of Southwestern Michigan, 5400 Niles Rd., St. Joseph, MI 49085. Online messages to www.allredfuneralhome.com.
