David Yost Paul

David Yost Paul, 93 of Berrien Springs, MI, passed away peacefully at The Willows in St. Joseph, MI on June 2, 2024.  He was born February 18, 1931 to Charles B. Paul Sr. and Ruth (Yost) Paul in Chicago, IL.   

He served in the Air Force as an aircraft mechanic from 1951 through 1952, receiving an honorable discharge in March of 1953.  A lifelong resident of Berrien Springs, he owned and operated Paul’s Auto Sales and Service (1960-2010) and Sportsman Bar (1979-1987).

In his early years, he raced what was then called Late Model Stocks and Super Modifieds, at local speedways in Millburg, Galesburg, and Jackson, MI, as well as others.  South Bend Motor Speedway (IN), Toldeo Motor Speedway (OH), and Oswego Motor Speedway (NY) became a weekly circuit with his super modified.  He won a 500 lap race at South Bend Motor Speedway as well as several track championships at Oswego Motor Speedway (NY) in the early 1960’s.  He also owned, prepared, and fielded an Indy Car in the starting lineup of the 1964 Indianapolis 500. He also drove his Indy Car in races at speedways in Trenton, NJ, Milwaukee, WI, and Longhorn, PA.  In his later years, he enjoyed flying his Cessna aircraft.  

He was preceded in death by his parents, and his older brother, Charles Paul Jr. of Berrien Springs, MI/Lake Wales, FL.  He is survived by his two sons, David Paul Jr. and Donald (Patricia) Paul, both of Berrien Springs, MI.

The family is being assisted with arrangements by Allred Funeral Home of Berrien Springs, MI. His final resting place will be Rose Hill Cemetery in Berrien Springs, MI.  Burial will be private with no other services planned.
