Berrien Springs, Michigan

Deloris Archer Pierce Shunkwiler, age 87, of Berrien Springs, Michigan, passed away at home surrounded by her family on June 7, 2026. She was born on October 13, 1938, in Leachville, Arkansas.

Deloris, known to many as Doris, was remembered for her kind and loving nature. Though quiet and reserved, she had a gentle wit that brought joy to those around her. Over the years, she met life’s challenges with strength and determination.

She worked for many years in the Berrien Springs school system and later volunteered as a foster grandparent. Known for her dependability and caring heart, she found purpose in helping others and became a familiar, comforting presence to many students and staff members.

Doris found happiness in life’s everyday pleasures. She took pride in keeping a beautiful yard and enjoyed reading, thrift shopping, and trips to the casino. She also loved crocheting and quilting, treasured her circle of lifelong friends, and never missed the excitement of Notre Dame game days.

Deloris was preceded in death by her parents, Gracie Bell (Girard) Archer and Asbery Archer; her first husband, Bill Pierce; her second husband, Stan Shunkwiler; and her twelve older siblings. She carried the memory of each of them with her and remained deeply connected to the family roots that shaped her life.

She is survived by her four children, Frankie Pierce, Luella (Dale) Westrick, Jonna Pierce, Billy (Michele) Pierce, and stepson Ted Shunkwiler. She also leaves behind seven grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren, and six great-great-grandchildren, each of whom was touched by her love and steady presence. Family meant everything to her, and she cherished every moment spent together. The example she set, the care she shared, and the memories she created will continue to live on through the generations who follow her. Doris will be remembered as a steady source of love and support to those closest to her. Those who knew her will carry her memory with them always. In accordance with her wishes, no services will be held.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Deloris’ memory to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
