George W. Shafer

George W. Shafer, 85, of Berrien Springs, passed away peacefully on Saturday, Jan. 21, 2023 at The Willows in St. Joseph.


George was born July 27, 1937 in Benton Harbor at Mercy Hospital, the son of the late Warren A. and Dorothy L. Shafer. He married Janet A. Bixby on Jan. 11, 1958 in Richmond, Calif. George graduated from Berrien Springs High School, attended Albion College, then served his country in the Navy. He worked at Bendix as an engineer, after which he sold insurance. His hobbies included traveling, golfing, camping, and fishing with family and friends, volunteering at the Berrien County Youth Fair, a member of the Jaycees, and with Janet helped the FEMA program provide temporary homes for victims of disasters.


He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Janet; their three children: Gregg (Carol), Michael (Tami), and Tami (Rusty); eight grandchildren: Jeremy, Amanda (Joseph), Ryan, Jessica (J.J.), Brandan (Madison), Colin (Marissa), Joshua (Lindsay), and Tyler; four great-grandchildren: Keegan, Avery, Theodore, and Emma; his brother Richard and his children Kory and Rochelle; and many nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews.
