John Robert Garrett

November 5, 1938 – October 27, 2026

John Robert Garrett, 87, of Niles, Michigan, passed away on October 27, 2026, at his residence from natural causes.

He was born on November 5, 1938, in Murray, Kentucky, to the late Dr. Evan L. and Amelia (Miles) Garrett. Bob was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Bruce Garrett and a great -granddaughter.

On August 4, 1957, in Pontiac, Michigan, he married Emily Mason, who survives along with two sons, J.B. Garrett of Niles, Michigan, and Bryan (Rebecca) Garrett of Benton Harbor, Michigan; a daughter, Linda Weakley of Berrien Springs, Michigan; a sister, Ann Siepman of Tennessee; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Bob was a hardworking man who believed in dedication, perseverance, and making the most of every day. Early in life, he worked tirelessly, holding three different jobs to provide for his family. Bob’s strong work ethic, determination, and commitment to go the extra mile defined both his character and the lasting legacy he and Emily built when they founded Garrett Laboratories, Inc in 1971. Today, the business continues to thrive with his son Bryan and grandchildren actively involved in carrying forward the values, dedication and vision they established.

Bob loved adventure and the outdoors, especially boating, a tradition shared by his entire family, who all owned boats and enjoyed boating out of St. Joseph, Michigan. He once served as an instructor with the U.S. Power Squadron. He also enjoyed dirt bike riding, a hobby shared by the entire family, and he earned multiple trophies in enduro competitions over the years.

Later in life, Bob and Emily treasured their time traveling in their motor coach to stay at Pelican Bay Resort in Naples, Florida. They shared a special love for their miniature schnauzers, Hansie, Fritzie, Georgie, and Honey Bunnie.

He was a lifelong member of the Seventh-day Adventist Church.

Above all, Bob loved his family. He often shared his heartfelt conviction that, “if you don’t have family, you don’t have anything.”
