Berrien Springs

Milton Edward William Richter, a cherished husband, father, papa, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully on May 8, 2024, at the age of 82, in Stevensville, Michigan. Born on May 30, 1941, in St. Joseph, Michigan, Milt's life was marked by dedication to his family, service to his country, and an unwavering commitment to his community.

Milt's legacy of love and laughter is carried on by his beloved wife of fifty-eight years, Deane (Moody) Richter, and their two daughters, Beth McLoughlin (Derek) and Jennifer Bixby (Bryan). His joy for life will forever be remembered by his six grandchildren, Madison McLoughlin, Jackson McLoughlin, Caroline McLoughlin, Darby McLoughlin, Alyson Bixby, and Clayton Bixby, who were the pride and joy of his world. He is also survived by his brothers, Melvin Richter (Connie) and Michael Richter (Sharon), who shared in the many adventures and stories that shaped their family's history.

Preceding him in death were his parents, Milton Richter and Helen (Ast) Richter, and his sister, Marlene Brown (Fred, survives), whose memory remains a treasured part of the Richter family tapestry.

Milt's educational journey culminated in a Bachelor's in Business Administration from Sienna Heights University, a foundation that served him well throughout his professional and civic life. He honorably served in the Army, a period of his life that he spoke of with immense pride and patriotism. His career as a Comptroller at Lake Michigan College, Director of the Small Business Center, and an educator in accounting and taxes at LMC, showcased his expertise and passion for nurturing the growth of both individuals and businesses alike.

His leadership extended into the heart of Berrien Springs, where he served as the Village President for a decade from 2011 to 2021. Milt's marriage to Deane on April 2, 1966, at First Baptist Church in Berrien Springs, was a testament to their enduring love and partnership that stood as a cornerstone for their family.

Milt's interests were as diverse as they were passionate. An avid Chicago Cubs fan and supporter of University of Michigan Football, he found joy in the thrill of the game. His love for golfing, particularly at Pipestone, was matched by his skill and the camaraderie shared with friends on the green. His sense of humor was as evident in his daily interactions as it was in his hobby of building model trucks and airplanes.

A man who never missed his grandchildren's events, Papa was their biggest cheerleader, always ready to share their accomplishments with anyone who would listen. His dedication to service was reflected in his membership with the Rotary and Post 85 American Legion. His voice was instrumental in the expansion of Shamrock Park, leaving a lasting mark on the community with Richter Way named in his honor.

Milt's faith was a guiding force in his life, and his love for the Lord was evident in his actions and words. His eclectic taste in music and fascination with trains were topics he could discuss for hours, much to the delight of those who knew him. His pride in his military service was a defining aspect of his character, one that inspired respect and gratitude from all who knew him.

Milt will be remembered as a loving, kind, and funny man, whose presence enriched the lives of those around him. His memory will continue to inspire those he leaves behind, as they strive to embody the values he held dear. Milt's life was a journey of joy, service, and unwavering love, a journey that has left an indelible mark on the hearts of many.
