Phillip was born May 28, 1939, in Buchanan, the son of Charles M. and Alma L. (McLaughlin) Stroud. He worked in construction as a drywall subcontractor and roofer. In his younger years, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, and gardening, and he loved to cook. He had a special interest in tractors, and he loved watching western movies. He cherished his friendship with Archie.

Phillip is preceded in death by two brothers, Charles Stroud and Lloyd Stroud; and his sister, Millie Fox.
