Robert “Bob” Guettler, a lifelong Berrien Springs resident passed away peacefully, at the age of 91, on January 9, 2026, after a brief illness.
Bob was born January 5, 1935, in Niles, MI and is the son of the late Carl and Bernice Guettler. He grew up in Berrien Springs and graduated from Berrien Springs High School in 1953. He graduated from Western Michigan University in 1957 with a major in music and a minor in math.
After graduation he moved north to start his teaching career serving in Woodland, Lake Odessa and Evart. He returned to his hometown in 1964 and was the band director for Berrien Springs Public Schools until 1970 when he switched to being a middle school math teacher. After teaching for 35 years, he retired in 1992.
He married his wife Betty (Sargent) on August 5, 1961, and they enjoyed 64 years together, camping, traveling and most of all spending time with their family. They were blessed with three children, Ken and his wife Joanne, Cheryl, Jim and his wife Lori, and four grandchildren, Alek, Analiese, Emily, and Drew.
Bob was active in the Lions Club, served on the Berrien Springs Community Library Board and on the Berrien County Youth Fair Board. He was also involved in the Burke Busy Bees 4-H Club teaching leathercraft. As a long- time member of the Methodist church in Berrien Springs he served as choir director and trustee and played in the bell choir.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in his honor to the Berrien County Youth Fair, the Berrien County 4-H Foundation, or Berrien Springs Christmas Care.
A memorial service will be held Thursday, January 15, 2026, at 11:00 am at the Methodist Church at 310 W. Mars Street, Berrien Springs, Michigan, with visitation beginning one hour prior.
