Robert Edward Zelmer

September 10, 1932 — October 4, 2023

Robert Edward Zelmer, a beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather and great-great-grandfather, passed away peacefully on October 4, 2023, in his hometown of Berrien Springs, Michigan. He was born on September 10, 1932, in the same town, to parents Paul J. Zelmer and Margaret Zelmer. He was a treasured member of the community and will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

Robert's life was characterized by hard work and dedication to his family. He spent twenty years at Pemco Die Casting Corporation in Bridgman, and then another twenty years at Premier Tool & Die Cast Corporation in Berrien Springs, where he retired. Robert was known for his handy skills, often lending a hand to others in need. His gentle demeanor and generous spirit were evident in his work and personal life.

In his spare time, Robert enjoyed a variety of activities. In his younger years, he loved hunting and fishing. As he grew older, he developed a passion for gardening, although he was known for giving most of his produce away to friends and neighbors. He also enjoyed trips to the casino and cherished the time he spent with his wife, Edna, in Glen Arbor each year. He had a knack for making sauerkraut, a recipe that he passed down to his children.

One of Robert's most cherished possessions was a Farmall A tractor, purchased brand new by his father in 1940. The tractor has remained a treasured family heirloom, participating in many local parades and serving as a symbol of Robert's deep roots in the community.

Robert was preceded in death by his wife, Edna Zelmer, and his parents, Paul J. Zelmer and Margaret Zelmer, and his sister Maggie Hickey. He is survived by his three sons, James (Cindy) Zelmer, John Zelmer, Jerrold Zelmer (Alice Vance), and his daughter, Barbara Christy. He leaves behind a legacy of love and care with his seven grandchildren, four step-grandchildren, thirteen great-grandchildren, and five great-great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his dearest friend Janet Sherburn.
