Robert M. Pilot

Robert M. Pilot, age 75, passed away peacefully on Saturday, July 25, 2026. Bob was born in Dowagiac, Michigan, where he enjoyed growing up with his younger brother Dave on the farm. He graduated from Dowagiac High school, attended Southwestern Michigan College and Michigan Technological University where he received his BS Degree in Mechanical Engineering.

His first job was with Ford Motor Company in Detroit but eventually he chose to move back to the Dowagiac area and took a job at Clark Equipment Company, which is where he met his wife, Susan Christl. They were married in 1977. They have one son, Justin, of whom Bob was very proud. Bob went on to work at Borg-Warner, Honeywell, and Bosch Braking Systems, before taking early retirement. After retirement, Bob and Sue spent many years traveling and spending winters in Florida.

Bob loved being outdoors, mushroom hunting, bicycling, and caring for their well-manicured lawn and surrounding landscaping at their home in Berrien Springs, where they resided for 35 years. Bob also loved everything about cars! He always took meticulous care of the 30+ cars that he had the privilege to own throughout his lifetime.

Bob was showing signs of cognitive impairment and was diagnosed with dementia in 2023 which prompted their move to Holland, Michigan. The family appreciates the aides at Farmstead by Resthaven who cared for him, as well as the care he received from Hospice of Holland. His last weeks were very difficult and their comforting support meant so much to the family.

He is survived by his loving wife Susan and his son Justin; his brother and sister-in-law Dave and Demi Pilot; in-laws Bill and Rita Christl, Laureen and Chris Haughey, Beverly and John Wickman; as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Bob was preceded in death by his parents, Mike and Betty Pilot.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, August 1, 2026 at 11:30 am at Allred Funeral Home, 212 S. Main Street, Berrien Springs MI 49103. Visitation will be at 10:30 am, prior to the funeral. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Holland, or to resthaven.org , or to a charity of the donors choice.
