Roland Christl

October 29, 1924 — September 23, 2023

Roland Christl, 98, a longtime resident of Berrien Springs, passed away Saturday,

September 23 at Hanson Hospice Center in Stevensville, MI. Roland was born in

Berrien Springs on October 29, 1924, to the late Anton and Hedwig Christl.


Roland grew up on the family farm that his parents purchased in 1920. He attended

Berrien Springs schools and participated in varsity basketball in his youth. During

WWII, 1945 - 1947, Roland proudly served in the Army in military occupied Japan.

After the war, Roland took over the family farm and was a lifelong fruit farmer in Berrien

Springs. On November 26, 1950, Roland married Lillian Bischoff, who preceded him in

death.


He was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He enjoyed spending time with his

family and taking part in their many activities. He also enjoyed fishing, playing card

games, doing jigsaw puzzles, and spending many winters in warm, sunny Florida.


Roland is survived by four children: William (Rita) Christl, Susan (Robert) Pilot, Laureen

(Christopher) Haughey, and Beverly (John) Wickman; five grandchildren: Melissa

(Doug) Swartz. Kimberli (Moe) Nabil, Justin Pilot, Andrea Wickman and Bradley

Wickman; and five great-grandchildren: Luca, Aria, and Kailey Swartz, and Gemma and

Judd Nabil. He is also survived by one sister, Veronica Courtney. Roland was

preceded in death by his wife, Lillian Christl, his parents, Anton and Hedwig Christl, and

brothers Richard and Ernest (Max) Christl.


There will be a private family funeral followed by burial in Rose Hill Cemetery in Berrien

Springs. Arrangements are entrusted to the Allred Funeral Home in Berrien Springs, MI.
